a Charlie Brown blessing

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Got some YouTube education from my kids this week to catch up on some of the latest. There was one video I really enjoyed and thought I would pass along because it is fun, light-hearted, and about blessing others. While the music is great and a blast to the past for me, it was a delight to see the audience interact in the piece. Some of my favorite scenes happen with a little romance around 1:38, lots of spunk at 2:15, and the all-play that starts at 2:52.

eye of the tiger

What if this was the beginning of training for living on mission? Here are some guys that took some extra efforts to prepare before returning to a people to tell their story to encourage and challenge others to live different lives.

no words for this

Been away for a while for several reasons. During the time, I’ve been worshipping a good bit with music from Jenny & Tyler. As they just released this video and not enough people know about this couple, here it is. Enjoy!

against modern evangelism

Posted by: | Comments (0)

David Platt speaks strongly against the modern church’s creation of the need to “say this prayer” and “accept Jesus into your heart.” Instead, we are to be about making disciples. Through this process, we are to communicate a “full picture of the gospel.”

storying

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Over the past weeks I have been busy with travel, meetings, and a writing project. I am expecting news to be available on the writing project soon, but it is under wraps for now. I can share that my writing has involved a good amount of research which has turned up all kinds of interesting things as usual. One of those, I wanted to go ahead and pass along. It is a video of Caesar Kalinowski, one of the planters and elders of Soma Communities. He has spent time learning from missionaries about the process of storying with pre-literates and now is advocating use of story with post-literates.

Storying has potential application in urban centers among nationals and what some may consider an emerging people group of transnationals–people that are more at home in international cities than they would be in smaller towns or villages among people that share a language and cultural background. I have used elements of storying with post-literates among multiple cultures and feel like this deserves more trial both in the U.S. and among the nations.

simply UK

Posted by: | Comments (1)

Often, I have the opportunity to talk with people about partnership opportunities in various parts of the UK. One key link I often refer them to is a 5 minute piece that gives a quick run down on how to understand the UK. It seems this is about as simple as it gets…and no, that is not so simple.

raw, gripping art

Posted by: | Comments (2)

This week I stumbled upon a video that was both unsettling and powerful. I think it is fair to call it music, though it is unlike anything I have heard before (note: I would never declare myself a music maven or on the cutting edge of developments in the music world). Raw, emotional, honest, Listener’s this piece was gripping. After watching the video a few times I downloaded the group’s most recent album and continue to listen, process and appreciate the art and ideas from Listener.

In addition to Wooden Heart, I have appreciated the feel and lyrics of “You Were a House on Fire.” Here are the lyrics to the second part of that piece from Listener’s site.

We all write songs about life, we just sing them different.
you sing the words but you don’t know the song.
and you expect us all to sing along? how selfish
the lengths that we go to, to put so much distance between us is staggering
you’re burning alive with stress and life
both hands in flames trying to hold the fire inside
drop and roll …repeat line for emphasis.
I’ll repeat it and repeat it until you believe it
you’re gonna be ok! say it to me…
the answer is still silence … I’ll take it as a maybe
I can’t decide if I should knock down your door or on it
say the word and I’ll take an axe to your heart or a pin prick
cut right through the dark, let it spill out the contents
on our knees sorting through the remnants
pour out your hate in my hands, I’ll let em slip through my fingers
and this is for you, and this is for the times that we only listen long enough to know the other person we’re talking to has the same opinions we do.
for when we’re burning inside, for when we’re trying to hide that fact
this is for the scalps that we went after, to be only the best dressed
to scrape another notch on our belts, add another feather to our headress
I want to be the bigger man for you, but I can’t take this truth

mission catalyzing principles

Posted by: | Comments (1)

This was the last talk that Michael Frost gave during our recent JetSet trip to Prague and Budapest. He gives several mission catalyzing principles. Christ focused, highly practical–good stuff. If you haven’t seen this piece yet, I encourage you to carve out 40 minutes and make it happen. Probably best to watch this with someone(s) with whom you are doing life.

join this conversation

Posted by: | Comments (0)

In one week I’ll be in Prague, Czech Republic with some friends old and new as we JetSet there and in Budapest, Hungary. Together we will be seeking to continue on a journey to learn and live the ways of Christ as we sharpen and encourage each other along with other planters both expat and nationals. One overarching question for our time together will be the hallmark issue of The Upstream Collective–What does it look like for the church to think and act like a missionary?

Throughout our time from April 12-20 we will have as special guests Michael and Caroline Frost. As he has played such a huge role in helping to shape my missiology and ecclessiology, I am confident that they will be a blessing and challenge again to me but also to others.

I would be honored to have you follow along and participate in the conversation that will be happening both in person and online. Feel free to check in here often as Grady Bauer, myself and most likely some other special guests will be sharing their thoughts and responses as the conversation unfolds and at the UC site, the Twitterverse (#js2011) and other blogs and Facebook pages.

Finally, I want to strongly encourage you to consider not just taking this virtual trip with us, but also to consider walking through it with others you are doing life with. It will be, I believe, a very worthwhile investment of your time.  I am including a video of a previous JetSet trip in which I was privileged to participate to help give you a better idea of some of what this virtual experience could be like.

Hope to see you there–virtually.
